Just thought I'd pass it along.

General Tormek Questions / Why do Razor Blades Dull...
« on: August 07, 2020, 02:33:05 pm »
There's some interesting articles floating around on why razor blades dull... thought this was a good summary...

Why Do Razor Blades Get Dull So Quickly?

(If you find other/better ones, please share).

I can see the results of this, (how the metal is manufactured), making its way to knives and other tools.  8)

Knife Sharpening / Setting the AngleMaster on a Tapered Knife Surface...
« on: August 01, 2020, 08:12:13 pm »
Here's a reminder... why you shouldn't use the AngleMaster to set the sharpening angle on a knife, that has a significant angle/taper from the spine (or in this case middle of the knife) to the edge, without making some sort of adjustment for it... remember this?(What Angle was This Knife Sharpened At)...

... (also maybe a reminder to look where you're grinding?)

The sharpener stated he watched the Tormek Sharpening video, and set the knife according to their instructions...  ::)

There has to be a better way.  :D

Knife Sharpening / Introduicing The KenJig Video Calculator...
« on: July 05, 2020, 06:11:58 pm »
I know that some people (cough...Ken...cough) have a slight aversion to computers, but like watching videos. :)

So introducing the KenJig Video Calculator - Revised... a video that can be watched and used to help build a KenJig.    :D

Based on the original formula (sorry Jan), to keep things simple and consistent as the original.  ;)

Edit 7/12/20:  While I made this with a bit of humor, I've now modified it to show both the Original and New Formula results.  (Same accuracy because... rounding). ;)

How to make a KenJig can be found HERE.

;D  ;D  ;D

Since calculators have now diverged... figured I'd repost some of my iOS calculators, that I've made and used.  They've been updated a bit... now you can either use the "USB to Wheel" measurement, or if you want to measure to the casing, FVB, etc., that is available in the app as "USB to Casing"... the calculators allow you to enter your own horizontal and vertical measurements, making it "less restricted".  So, for example, it can be used if you build your own FVB, or use a different machine.  (If you don't know what this means, stick to the "USB to Wheel"... then the h and v measurements are not relevant).  Some suggested measurements are given in the app.

An Angle Calculator to set the USB height, that works in the Apple Numbers app...

(To install click "Direct Download"  then "Copy to Numbers").

An Angle Calculator to set the USB height, that works in the GoCalc app...

(To install click "Download" save the file TO A SEPARATE COMPUTER or DEVICE, then follow the instructions in the GoCalc app to "Import Calculations"... do not "Restore Backup").  You can't (from what I can tell), download the file to the device that has the GoCalc app on it... it installs the calculators via WiFi.  (This will actually install 2 calculators).

GoCalc app can be purchased thru the Apple Store (I have no affiliation)...

Just be advised... they don't come with any instructions... up to you to figure out how to install and use them... properly.  ;)

Added 3/8/21Here's a link to an Excel Spreadsheet, that will import into Google Sheets...

(Figured I'd add it since technically it will run in Google Sheets on iOS too...). ;)

(I actually posted this before, here's a bit more info... )

(These are alternatives to the Calcapp... giving the user a bit more info, and not having to re-enter the parameters every time the program starts.  The Calcapp app has the advantage of being easier to install and run).

All based on Dutchman's fine work!

Enjoy!   :)

Edit 7/29/20: Uploaded new files with minor format changes... (no change in results). ;)
Edit 8/6/20:  Uploaded new Numbers file with minor format changes... (no changes in results). ;)

Knife Sharpening / Bladeology podcast interview...
« on: May 04, 2020, 06:20:59 pm »
There is a podcast called "Bladeology" (that I never heard of before), that I ran across, that recently interviewed Larrin Thomas, the person behind "Knife Steel Nerds".  It's worth a listen.

There's a link to a YT video HERE, (there's no actual video, just the sound)... obviously, you can also find it in your favorite podcast app, and listen that way.

Knife Sharpening / The "Ultimate All-In-One Angle Tool"...
« on: January 13, 2020, 05:18:05 pm »
Brian from "bootheel customs" has created the "Ultimate All-In-One Angle Tool"...

... that is used for setting the USB height, (for setting the angle in knife sharpening).  It measures the Wheel Diameter, Projection Distance, and then, (with the aid of a calculator), sets the USB height measuring directly to the wheel.  I've used one the last week or so, and found it to work well.

Edit:  The All-In-One Angle Tool is now sold  HERE

EditA newer (& shorter) YouTube Instruction Video
An older YouTube Video, showing it in use.

(p.s. Not affiliated BTW, just like it).

Knife Sharpening / Clamp of the week... (or try something different)...

Knife Sharpening / Flat grinding knives with the MB-100 & Diamond Wheel
« on: October 31, 2018, 06:44:59 pm »
So... I've tried "flat grinding" a couple of knives on the side of a diamond wheel, with the MB-100/Diamond Wheel setup...

(The zip-tie is just for the photos).

... I'm finding it worked a bit better than I thought it would (I think the picture in the manual was a bit deceiving).  I'm doing it by standing in front of the wheel (the side of the machine I guess), looking down, so I can see where I'm making contact.

At this point I can say it works... a bit awkward for me at first, but with some practice I think it'll work well.  In fact, it's easier to see contact in the belly/tip area this way.  (Pretty much "lift" method here, although in this case it's not "up" but "out"... towards your body if standing on the side)...  ???

Figured I'd start a thread for some input, and see what others find if/when they try it.

p.s.  I just made a "dry run" with the "4 Stop Collar" setup... I think it might have some potential with this setup also, (for some knives anyway)...
