Knife Sharpening / CBN on mainstream knives
« on: July 06, 2019, 11:34:44 pm »
Hello everyone,

So I’m seriously considering purchasing a couple of custom cbn wheels from woodturning wonders. I’m looking at getting the tornado Jr. 8 inch wheels customized with radius edges. One 400 grit and one 1200 grit. My concern is will these wheels load up quickly when used on mainstream knives? All the info I can find is that they are not meant to be used on carbon steel and are meant for HS steel. But also that’s pertaining to high speed grinding. So on a low speed such as a tormek, used with water will they still load up? I’m hoping I can use them for the majority of my knife sharpening and never have to worry about them going out of round. Also I’m leaning towards cbn because as far as I know I can’t get diamond wheels customized with radius edges.

Thanks,
Antz

General Tormek Questions / Grinding of tool steel

I came across the very interesting article. It’s packed full of information on grinding tool steels. Just thought I’d post a link if anyone is interested.

Knife Sharpening / Cyclone knife

I have a question. How would any of you go about sharpening a knife like this. I saw it on amazon and it got me thinking about what I would do if by chance I ever ran into one of these.

Has this happened to anyone before? I was trueing my SG wheel and it was going perfectly until I reached the far edge of the stone, right when the trueing tooth was leaving the wheel it blew out the edge leaving some pretty massive chips. I’m pretty upset about it because I can’t use that edge of the stone for small curves now unless I true off a lot more material. Did I do something wrong?? Any advice is appreciated.

General Tormek Questions / Leather wheel care
« on: June 12, 2019, 10:43:08 pm »
Hi everyone,

Question about leather wheel care. Where I store my t-8 is in an industrial steel warehouse. There’s no ac and during the day it’s probably a constant mid 90 degree dry heat if not hotter. Will this dry out my leather wheel fairly quickly? And if so should I be stripping the compound and oiling the leather more frequently than most users?

Thanks,

So I got a question for you knife sharpening experts. On a lot of knives where the bevel meets the choil the blade curves in slightly toward the spine of the knife. With the tormek stone being 2 inches wide I can’t seem to find a way to satisfactorily sharpen this small portion of the knife. I can only think of two ways. One being taking off way to much material from the entire length of the knife until it becomes flat all the way to the choil. Or two trying to get into that little curve with the edge of the grinding wheel which I’m reluctant to try as the edge of the wheel is a lot rougher than the top. I also don’t want to “radius” the edge of my grinding wheel to try and get in the curve. Am I missing something? Also I can’t figure out how to upload any pictures as it keeps telling me file to big.

Knife Sharpening / T-4 vs T-8 BESS sharpness?
« on: June 04, 2019, 08:07:19 pm »
Good morning everyone,
I thought this might be an interesting topic maybe for people who are deciding between T-4 and T-8. Has anyone ever sharpened two identical knives, one on T-4 and one on T-8 and compared BESS sharpness scores? I’m just wondering if there is a significant difference between scores. I don’t have a sharpness tester so maybe someone out there has either done this test or has some insight into the topic.

General Tormek Questions / CBN vs Diamond?
« on: June 02, 2019, 08:49:26 am »
Sorry for all my newbie Tormek questions but is there a noticeable difference between CBN wheels vs diamond wheels? Does one preform better than the other? I’m asking because the CBN wheels from wood turners wonders are considerably cheaper. Another thing is I read the CBN should be used only dry, so will using it with water affect the grind? I’m primarily going to use them for knife sharpening when I run into super steels and I also have someone asking me to do their planer and jointer blades which I know would take a very long time on the aluminum oxide wheel.

Thanks

So I have an idea to assist with freehand sharpening on tormek or paper wheels or bench grinders for that matter. First use a protractor to mark the angles you want to sharpen or shape at. Second mount a laser line market overhead. Then just shoot the laser on your choice of angle and sharpen away. Just keep the edge of your knife on that laser mark to produce consistent bevels. Just thought I’d share my idea. I haven’t done it yet but I will soon. The laser is pretty cheap (24$ US). And it’s adjustable. Here’s a link

General Tormek Questions / Homemade pivot collar for knife jig
« on: May 28, 2019, 08:42:49 am »
I’m thinking of making my own pivot collar to use with knife jigs. I have a lot of people wanting me to sharpen skinning knives and it’s difficult with the stock jig. My plan is to weld two 1.25 inch steel bars to a 12mm clamping collar. Both the collar and the bars will be 316 stainless steel. The steel bar I plan to use is .25 inch diameter. My question is, will the .25 diameter rod work well or should it be a slightly larger diameter like says 3/8 or 1/2 inch. This question is mostly aimed at people who have either made their own pivot collar or have experience with a custom pivot collar. Any advice will be appreciated.

Knife Sharpening / Advice for 10 inch paper wheels
« on: May 27, 2019, 05:30:55 am »
Hi everyone,  I’m new to this forum but I’ve been reading a lot of great posts and learning a lot. I’ve recently started sharpening professionally in Hawaii (not a lot of sharpeners out here). I’m very skilled with stones and that’s how I was doing it for a good while. I recently got a Tormek T8 with hand tool kit and a six inch buffer with 8 inch paper wheels. So far I’ve sharpened about 30 plus knives in first week of my new set up with AMAZING results. But I was thinking about using 10 inch paper wheels instead of 8 inch paper wheels to better match the tormek wheel size. Was wondering if anyone had a good buffer to recommend or is it fine to run them on my 6 inch buffer? And advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Antz
