I know I'm late to the party but, I can confirm that using the Lansky holder on the Tormek WORKS!  I have a Spyderco Tenacious that I used with the SVM-45 and could not get good results with it.  I'm sure it has more to do with the blade shape and such, but I was very impressed with how well it worked.  Also, the first time I sharpened the Spyderco Tenacious I noticed that the knife was not sitting in the SVM-45 centered, which led to uneven bevels.  I used the Lansky holder and worked the "shallow" side more the the other and PRESTO!  Perfectly even and incredibly sharp.  I'm not saying that the Lansky holder is the "end all, be all", but it worked well for that particular knife.

Knife Sharpening / Zero Tolerance 350 Sharpening Techniques

Good Morning All!

I hope everyone is healthy and safe during this time of crisis.

One of my co-workers owns a Zero Tolerance 350.  It has an odd blade shape, I'm not educated enough to know what exactly you would call it so I included a picture.  I am seeking techniques, tips, and tricks to retain the blade shape.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all so much!

General Tormek Questions / When did you...
« on: March 07, 2020, 10:18:09 pm »
Good afternoon all,

I've had my Tormek T-8 for about 4 weeks.  I've sharpened about 30-40 knives, a few pairs of scissors, and some chisels for friends and family members.  I know I need to do LOTS more before I even consider to start doing this professionally.  At what point did you feel comfortable in your abilities to start charging for your services?  Also, what do you consider to be a fair price for said services?  I'm trying to get a feel for the market and I would rather ask folks that have been doing this for a while rather than starting off blind.  Lastly, back when I was in gunsmith school we had a set of 3 flat oil stones of different grits to sharpen our chisels that we used for stock making.  They had a black plastic base that my gunsmithing instructor would pour transmission fluid in and use in place of honing oil (picture below).  Would it be a benefit to use this type of oil/fluid on Tormek stones?

As always, I thank you so much for your time, input, suggestions and consideration.

Thank you,

Stephen M.

Good afternoon All!

Does anyone know if there is a mobile phone app version of the popular grinding software program?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Warm regards,

General Tormek Questions / Seeking Tanto Blades Tips and Tricks

Good Morning All!

First off, let me thank you for letting me join the "cool kids club"!  I've had my Tormek T-8 for 5 days now and I have to say, it is an incredible machine!  However, after reading a number of posts I understand that as great as it is, it has limitations.  I haven't really seen any videos about sharpening tanto style blades.  Does anyone have recommendations for setup?  Or any tips and tricks?  Or would it be better not to do those.
Second, when sharpening flat blade knives I am experiencing a unique issue.  After working the blade on the stone, the middle of the blade appears to curve in slightly (picture attached).  Is this a technique issue?  What is the best way to prevent this from happening again?
Lastly, when discussing blade length, I own a Spyderco Endura 4 with a half serrated blade (picture link below).  The total blade length is listed a 3.75".  When sharpening a knife like this, would it be best to use the small knife jig (SVM-00)?

Thank you so much for your suggestions!  I really appreciate your help and suggestions!
