Knife Sharpening / Re: Replacement of knob
« on: September 02, 2019, 07:27:19 am »
Sharpco, I think Ken's suggestion of a smaller thumb screw provides a better solution as you don't need to fiddle around with a hex key. I have a selection of lower profile thumb screws I recently bought from China and I have checked and these work also.

I'm pleased to be able to hone using the USB in the horizontal position should the need arises again, so thank you for raising the question as it made me revisit the issue.

I think Ken's solution is not enough. When honing at high angle, it'll still cause problem.

Sharpco,
Another workable solution is the 7190 knob screw from the SE-77 jig. Here is a page showing it:

https://advanced-machinery.myshopify.com/pages/se-77-parts-diagram

I tried fitting it on my SVM-45. It fits well and does not extend beyond the jig.

Ken.
That's a good idea too.

Ok, I guess the best way to achieve this is to switch the SVM-45 knife jig thumb screw with a M6-sized grub screw which you can tighten up flush with an hex key. I took one from a 12mm collar I had lying around (see pic)

Edit: meant to point out that you can see that I tried to use my SVM-45 at a fairly acute angle :)

M6 grub screw! Good idea! Thanks :)

I faced this same issue when I first attempted to use the USB to hone a knife on the leather wheel, which I guess is why much of the literature I have read suggests that knife honing on the Tormek leather wheel is done freehand.

I stand to be corrected but the only way around this issue is to mount the USB in a Front Vertical Base so the SVM-45 knife jig will not snag on the support bar pillars.

I'm not skillful at freeehand honing. And I already have FVB but I'm looking for honing method not using FVB.

Support and knob are interfering. Is there any solution?

General Tormek Questions / Re: Diamond spray on leather wheel?

I applied diluted Jende diamond emulsion on leather wheel that is applied diamond paste. It works.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your YouTube video Tormek Honing Wheel Test https://youtu.be/kO1dyGxa3Rg where you prepared two Tormek honing wheels with 5 micron and .5 micron diamond pastes. Took particular note of your meticulous methodology and your shop’s near operating room cleanliness!

The video answered my own thoughts about using separate honing wheels with various compounds. In fact I found both pastes online but unfortunately the 5 micron paste was out of stock.

A question? How did you apply the Jende emulsion? Was it in addition to one of these prepared wheels?

:) I applied the Jende emulsion on the leather wheel you saw in my video. 4 micron and 0.5 micron.

General Tormek Questions / Diamond spray on leather wheel?
« on: July 07, 2019, 02:36:13 am »
Tormek leather wheel doesn't polish the high abrasive resistant steel like CPM-S110V.

How about using alcohol or water base diamond spray on leather wheel?(PA-70 + Diamond spray)

What micron do you think would be good for?

I have two. One for Tormek, one for Viel. I'm satisfied with that.

I use both the Norton Bear and also duck tape
To protect the handles I have a 100mm (4”) roll of shrink wrap packaging plastic
The shrink wrap and handle applicator was around $8 NZ Works well as if you stretch it while wrapping its tight on the knife

I agree. I also use the stretch film to protect handle :)

Sharpco,
I don't recall any other posts with broken O-rings. Please contact support and post.
Ken

They said they'll send spare O-ring to me. :)
