When sharpening, you will notice a burr (or wire edge) develop on the upper side of the edge. This need to be removed to get a real sharp edge. You do this on the Tormek machine with the leather honing wheel combined with honing compound for a nice finish.
(If you do not remove the burr, it will break off as soon as you start using the tool, leaving you with a blunt, torn edge.)
The distance between each number is 0,25 mm (0,01″).
The Tormek Handbook HB-10 is included with every machine and its language depends on your country of purchase. You can also buy the handbook from your reseller. Jig instructions are available for download, see each jig's product page.
Basically to ensure performance and that you will get the most out of your system. Electrical standards vary depending on country. By buying from a trusted local dealer you will get the right electrical plug to fit your connection. Using a machine under the wrong current conditions will break your warranty. Remember also that it is always the reseller who is your contact regarding warranty questions. Also, if problems should occur, you need to ship your machine back to the country from which you bought it. Last but not least, the enclosed Tormek Handbook, safety instructions and DVD might not be in your preferred language.
Register your machine and you can download the latest version of the Tormek Handbook. It applies to all Tormek machine models.
The short answer is no; these are delicate knives and we cannot guarantee the result.
However, we know that some use our Scissors Jig SVX-150. If you do want to try it, remember that it is important that your scissors have a straight edge on the top, so that they can be mounted correctly in the jig. It is also important to use the Japanese Waterstone (SJ-250/SJ-200), since hair scissors don't need much steel removal. We would recommend to try on some less expensive scissors to begin with.
Our 4000 model, which we no longer build, was designed for commercial kitchens. The housing was made out of stainless steel, but the machine had the same stone and honing wheel as the Tormek T-7. After the update of the T-7 there is no longer a risk for rust on the housing. We noticed that those who were torn about which machine to buy finally choose the T-7 so we decided to stop building the 4000 model.
Remember to check the Tormek Handbook for answers.
