No, this is not possible due to the new integrated design of the T-4.
No, it is integrated with the T-8 design, which incorporates the lift for the water trough.
It depends on the machine model. If you have a newer machine, it is easiest to check on the short side on the outside of the package box, just beneath the EAN code. The serial number is also placed on the machine, see below.
Tormek T-8: The serial number is located underneath the machine.
Tormek T-7: The serial number is located inside the machine beside the cable.
Tormek T-4: The serial number is located underneath the machine.
Tormek T-3: The serial number is located underneath the machine)
Tormek 2000: The serial number is located inside the machine beside the cable.
Tormek 1200: The serial number is located underneath the machine.
Earlier models: Models made between 1973 and 2001 do not have a serial number.
Yes, it does. But we do recommend the Tormek T-8/Tormek T-7 for sharpening of drill bits due to its wider stone and the motor which can run continuously (the Tormek T-4 has a 30-minute limit).
Tools like planer blades have such a large grinding surface that we recommend one of our larger models, like the Tormek T-8, for this purpose. Also the size of the jig requires a steady base that the larger machine models offer. It is also an advantage to have the SB-250 Tormek Blackstone since it has a faster material removal. Using the Tormek T-4 will take much longer time due to the stones size, but it will work.
The T-8 model has an updated design and maximises the precision thanks to the revolutionary fully cast housing which guarantees minimal play for the Universal Support.
The Advanced Water Through is upgraded with a screw lift and a scraper which incorporates a strong magnet. The magnet attracts the steel particles ground from the tools being sharpened, which keeps your stone clean and cutting more freely. When you remove the scraper, the magnet will release the steel particles and you can easily clean the trough.
The drive wheel on the T-8 is in zinc.
Enclosed with the T-8 is the upgraded Square Edge Jig SE-77. Its design now has a movable side that allows for a fine adjustment to the setting, which ensures a 90° corner or the possibility to create a cambered shape.
For SVP-80 we recommend the larger Tormek machine models like Tormek T-8, or earlier models with a 250 mm stone diameter.
Our 4000 model, which we no longer build, was designed for commercial kitchens. The housing was made out of stainless steel, but the machine had the same stone and honing wheel as the Tormek T-7. After the update of the T-7 there is no longer a risk for rust on the housing. We noticed that those who were torn about which machine to buy finally choose the T-7 so we decided to stop building the 4000 model.
Tormek T-7 has a stronger motor capacity and can run continuously, compared to the Tormek T-4 which has a limited duration of 30 minutes. The bigger machines also have a larger grindstone (250 mm diameter compared to 200 mm) and a larger honing wheel (220 mm diameter compared to 145 mm). Enclosed with the T-7 is also the Square Edge Jig SE-76 for wood chisels and plane irons and the Truing Tool TT-50 which helps keep your stone clean and efficient.
Enclosed both with the T-7 and T-4 is the Tormek Handbook, the Honing Compound, the AngleMaster, the Stone Grader and the Tormek DVD.
It is important to think about what kind of tools you will sharpen with your machine. We recommend the larger models for sharpening of drill bits and planer blades, due to the stones width. If you are a woodcarver or hobbyist and mainly sharpen smaller tools you might find the T-4 more convenient.
With the Tormek T-4 you can sharpen almost every edge tool. The machine is part of our Water Cooled Sharpening System and compatible with all Tormek jigs and accessories. The Tormek T-2 is intended for knife sharpening for chefs and the professional kitchen.
Below you will find information about the biggest differences between the machines. You can also read more on the product pages of the Tormek T-4 and Tormek T-2 or see our comparison chart.
Different types of grinding wheels
The Tormek T-4 comes with our Original Grindstone, with 220 grit as standard. With the Stone Grader, you can change the grit size to 1000 grit to give a finer sharpening surface. As an option, our Japanese Waterstone with 4000 grit, is available.
The Tormek T-2 comes with a diamond wheel with 600 grit. As an option, we have a diamond wheel with 320 grit, for faster steel removal.
Honing on leather or composite wheel
The Tormek T-4 is equipped with a honing wheel in genuine Swedish leather. Apply the Honing Compound, which consists of a combination of micro abrasives and polishing components, before honing.
The Tormek T-2 has a specially developed composite wheel with integrated polish, which you use after sharpening to achieve a sharp edge.
A versatile or a specialized system?
As mentioned above, you can sharpen a variety of tools such as knives, scissors, woodworking tools, planer blades and drill bits with the Tormek T-4. The machine is versatile and part of the Tormek Water Cooled Sharpening System which means it is compatible with our full range of jigs and accessories.
The Tormek T-2 is designed, optimised and only intended for kitchen knives. You can sharpen knives which are 14-60 mm (9/16"-23/8") wide with a maximum thickness of 3,5 mm (1/8"). The Tormek T-2 Knife Sharpener is designed for the professional kitchen and is ideal when one or multiple chefs quickly need to sharpen knives to a top result. This machine is not compatible with Tormek jigs and accessories.
7 years warranty
The Tormek T-4 and T-2 both comes with 7 years warranty. When used for commercial, industrial or educational purpose the warranty is 2 years. The same applies if the machines are used for a professional sharpening service.
*A jig is a device in which you mount your edge tool to achieve a controlled sharpening. During sharpening, the jigs operate on the Universal Support, which enables to get a consistent sharpening angle towards the stone.
