The lip is there to increase the precision of the jig. If it wasn't there, a tool could ride on a surface that is not completely flat. We wanted a higher precision and by using a construction like this, the tools get better lined up.
If you use components of the Tormek system combined with other types of grinders or brands of water cooled sharpening machines, we cannot make any guarantees regarding the function and results.
All of the Tormek jigs and accessories are manufactured to the same high quality standard as the Tormek sharpening machines and they are designed to work together.
"A jig" can also be referred to as a fixture by which you can control your sharpening of a specific tool. It enables you to get a consistent sharpening angle towards the stone, which has a number of advantages. It greatly increases the efficiency and accuracy of the sharpening. All Tormek jigs are guided by the Universal Support.
Find the tool you want to sharpen from our jig selection guide Which jig should I use?
Yes, it does. But we do recommend the Tormek T-8/Tormek T-7 for sharpening of drill bits due to its wider stone and the motor which can run continuously (the Tormek T-4 has a 30-minute limit).
Yes, but you need to sharpen free hand. We recommend that you use one of the bigger models, like Tormek T-8.
The Drill Bit Attachment does not work with brad point drill bits, only with traditional twist drill bits.
Yes, with the Square Edge Jig SE-77 you can to fine adjust the sides in order to achieve a curved edge. See the SE-77 product page how it works.
Tools like planer blades have such a large grinding surface that we recommend one of our larger models, like the Tormek T-8, for this purpose. Also the size of the jig requires a steady base that the larger machine models offer. It is also an advantage to have the SB-250 Tormek Blackstone since it has a faster material removal. Using the Tormek T-4 will take much longer time due to the stones size, but it will work.
We suggest you start with the Knife Jig SVM-45, which handles knives down to 70 mm (2 3/4″). It can also sharpen longer knives if the handle is steady (so that the knife does not bend during sharpening). If you like you can complement with the Small Knife Holder SVM-00 if you need to sharpen smaller knives.
For longer knives with a thinner blade, such as fillet knives, we recommend our wider jig SVM-140 that stabilizes the blade.
The short answer is no; these are delicate knives and we cannot guarantee the result.
However, we know that some use our Scissors Jig SVX-150. If you do want to try it, remember that it is important that your scissors have a straight edge on the top, so that they can be mounted correctly in the jig. It is also important to use the Japanese Waterstone (SJ-250/SJ-200), since hair scissors don't need much steel removal. We would recommend to try on some less expensive scissors to begin with.
There are a number of factors that can affect the result, see this checklist under specifications on the SE-76 product page.
Remember to check the Tormek Handbook for answers.
